Why North County San Diego Homeowners Are Switching to Artificial Turf
San Diego water costs continue to climb. Rates rose 8.7% in January 2025, and a typical residential lawn uses roughly 44 gallons of water per square foot per year. Natural grass is expensive to sustain here year-round.
IntegriTurf products feature UV-stabilized fibers that require no mowing, no fertilizing, and stay green 365 days a year. Products like El Dorado 80 are designed to look indistinguishable from natural grass even up close.
Every IntegriTurf product is safe for kids. Kennel Pro drains over 800 inches per hour for dedicated pet areas, and our residential lineup includes options for low-traffic and pet-compatible spaces.

How Panjia Installs Artificial Turf
Demolition and Site Prep
Demolition is the first step. In some cases we apply an herbicide to the installation area before demo begins to kill off existing weeds or grass at the root. During demolition we remove approximately 3.5 to 4 inches of existing earth to make room for the road base. In cases where we are raising the grade, we remove existing vegetation and bring the level up with Class II road base rather than exporting soil.
Class II Road Base Installation
We prefer Class II road base over decomposed granite. Class II is an unbound mixture of 3/4-inch minus crushed rock and fines, the same material CalTrans installs beneath roads and highways. Decomposed granite provides a smoother finish and is easier to work with, but it becomes soft when over-saturated. Class II compacts firmer and stays stable. The base is compacted in lifts using a plate compactor until we reach 95% compaction.
Weed Barrier and Turf Layout
Once the base is compacted, we install a DuPont 25-year polyethylene weed barrier over the entire area. This is a heavy-duty fabric that does not deteriorate the way some fabric types do. It is tacked to the base using sod staples or nails. The turf is then rolled out and positioned so the grain of the fibers faces the primary viewing direction, typically toward the house in backyard installs and toward the street in front yards.
S-Seam Turf Seaming
Seaming is the most critical step and the one most installers get wrong. The standard method is a butt-seam: two edges pushed together in a straight line and nailed every 4 to 6 inches. We use the S-Seam method on every installation. A proprietary stencil cuts both edges in a 9-inch radius curve, allowing the panels to overlap. The seam is secured with 12-inch, .48mm seaming tape and a specialty adhesive designed for turf, then nailed through the S-Seam with 40D 5-inch common nails. The result is a seam that is invisible under normal viewing conditions.
Infill Application
Turf infill serves two functions: it anchors the backing by adding weight, preventing ripples from developing during temperature changes, and it keeps the turf fibers standing upright. We use silica sand as the baseline infill for landscape applications. For pet areas, we use Durafill, a rounded quartzidic sand with an acrylic coating and Microban antimicrobial technology that resists odor-causing bacteria. For playgrounds, we increase the infill depth to improve impact attenuation ratings.
Power Broom Finish
The final step is grooming the installed turf with a motorized power broom. The broom is run against the grain of the turf fibers, which drives the infill down below the thatch line and stands the fibers upright. This gives the turf its finished, full appearance. A push-broom or grandi rake can achieve the same result but a motorized broom is significantly faster on larger installations.
Artificial Turf Installation Pricing in San Marcos and North County San Diego
Installed cost in North County San Diego typically runs $11 to $20 per square foot for quality residential turf. A standard 1,000 sq ft lawn conversion generally falls between $11,000 and $18,000 fully installed.
What moves the number: which IntegriTurf product you select, site prep complexity, drainage corrections needed, access difficulty, and whether existing surfaces need removal.
Long-term math: San Diego water rates rose 8.7% in January 2025. A typical residential lawn uses roughly 44 gallons per square foot per year. Most homeowners recoup installation cost within 5 to 7 years in water and maintenance savings, and financing terms up to 20 years make the monthly cost manageable from day one.

Signs It's Time to Replace Your Lawn
Water bill keeps climbing
You're paying San Diego's rising water rates to keep a lawn that looks patchy anyway.
Weeds, pests, and brown patches
Every season brings the same cycle of treatments, re-seeding, and disappointing results.
Pets are destroying the grass
Dogs dig, run, and track mud inside. Kennel Pro is designed for exactly this.
Maintenance costs over $1,000 a year
Between water, fertilizer, pest control, and mowing, natural grass is expensive to own.
Yard goes dormant every dry season
North County summers are hard on natural grass. IntegriTurf stays green regardless of rainfall.
Hours of upkeep every week
That time does not come back. Artificial turf requires no regular maintenance.
If any of these sound familiar, a site visit from Panjia shows you what your yard could look like and exactly what it would cost, using IntegriTurf, the product we install on every project.
