What Residential Playground Turf Should Actually Do
PFAS-Free Materials Only
We do not install any turf product containing PFAS chemicals. All IntegriTurf products are PFAS-free. For a surface where children play and sit daily, material safety is the starting point, not a selling point.
Infill Depth Determines Fall Safety
Standard landscape turf is installed with minimal infill for appearance. Playground turf is installed with more infill at greater depth to improve impact attenuation. We spec the infill depth based on the fall height of your equipment.
High Face Weight for High Traffic
Children's play areas experience concentrated foot traffic in the same spots, under swings, at the base of slides, at the entry point of any structure. We specify a higher face weight product for playground applications to handle this without matting.

The Panjia Playground Turf Installation Process
Demolition and Site Prep
Demolition is the first step. In some cases we apply an herbicide to the installation area before demo begins to kill off existing weeds or grass at the root. During demolition we remove approximately 3.5 to 4 inches of existing earth to make room for the road base. In cases where we are raising the grade, we remove existing vegetation and bring the level up with Class II road base rather than exporting soil.
Class II Road Base Installation
We prefer Class II road base over decomposed granite. Class II is an unbound mixture of 3/4-inch minus crushed rock and fines, the same material CalTrans installs beneath roads and highways. The base is compacted in lifts using a plate compactor until we reach 95% compaction. For playground areas we assess soil drainage beneath the base.
Weed Barrier and Turf Layout
Once the base is compacted, we install a DuPont 25-year polyethylene weed barrier over the entire area. This is a heavy-duty fabric that does not deteriorate the way some fabric types do. It is tacked to the base using sod staples or nails. The high face weight playground turf is then rolled out and positioned so the grain of the fibers faces the primary viewing direction.
S-Seam Turf Seaming
Seaming is the most critical step and the one most installers get wrong. The standard method is a butt-seam: two edges pushed together in a straight line and nailed every 4 to 6 inches. We use the S-Seam method on every installation. A proprietary stencil cuts both edges in a 9-inch radius curve, allowing the panels to overlap. The seam is secured with 12-inch, .48mm seaming tape and a specialty adhesive designed for turf, then nailed through the S-Seam with 40D 5-inch common nails. The result is a seam that is invisible under normal viewing conditions.
Playground Infill Application
For playground applications, we increase the infill depth beyond standard landscape specifications to improve impact attenuation. Crumb rubber infill provides the highest impact ratings for commercial applications but increases surface temperature and is not recommended for residential installations in San Diego's climate. For residential playgrounds, we use Durafill at increased depth to provide improved cushioning without the temperature and off-gassing concerns of crumb rubber.
Power Broom Finish
The final step is grooming the installed turf with a motorized power broom. The broom is run against the grain of the turf fibers, which drives the infill down below the thatch line and stands the fibers upright. This gives the turf its finished, full appearance. A push-broom or grandi rake can achieve the same result but a motorized broom is significantly faster on larger installations.

Playground Turf Questions from San Diego Parents and HOAs
Yes, when installed with appropriate materials and infill depth. We use PFAS-free turf products only. For residential playgrounds, we use Durafill infill at increased depth for improved impact attenuation. We do not use crumb rubber infill in residential applications.
Impact attenuation measures how well a surface cushions a fall. It is expressed as a G-max rating, the lower the number, the safer the surface. The ASTM F1292 standard sets 200 G-max as the threshold for acceptable playground safety. The infill depth and product selection determine the rating your installed surface achieves.
Fall height rating depends on the turf product, infill type, and infill depth. We spec the installation to meet the fall height requirements of your specific equipment. We will confirm the required fall height at the site visit based on the equipment in place or planned.
Yes. We work with HOAs across North County San Diego on common area playground installations. We provide documentation on materials and impact ratings for HOA review and submit required plans before work begins.
For normal use, periodic hosing is sufficient. For areas with significant debris, a leaf blower clears material from the surface without disturbing infill. Periodic infill top-up may be needed in very high traffic areas after several years of use.
Playground turf is installed with more infill at greater depth for impact attenuation. The face weight of the turf product is typically higher to withstand concentrated foot traffic. The surface is also designed to drain quickly so the area is usable soon after rain.
