Dog Yards Need More Than Standard Turf
Drainage Speed Matters
A standard landscape turf backing drains at 30 to 50 inches per hour. Kennel Pro's Go-Flow backing drains at over 800 inches per hour. In a dog yard that sees daily use, the difference is whether liquid moves through the system immediately or pools on the surface.
The Right Infill Eliminates Odor
Odor comes from bacterial breakdown of urine, not from the urine itself. Durafill's Microban antimicrobial technology prevents the bacteria from establishing in the infill layer. Zeofill, used as a secondary layer in high-use areas, absorbs ammonia gases before they reach the surface.
PFAS-Free Only
We do not install any turf product that contains PFAS chemicals. This is non-negotiable for us. Kennel Pro is PFAS-free, as are all IntegriTurf products. For a dog that spends time on the surface daily, material safety is not optional.

The Panjia Pet Turf Installation Process
Demolition and Site Prep
Demolition is the first step. In some cases we apply an herbicide to the installation area before demo begins to kill off existing weeds or grass at the root. During demolition we remove approximately 3.5 to 4 inches of existing earth to make room for the road base. In cases where we are raising the grade, we remove existing vegetation and bring the level up with Class II road base rather than exporting soil.
Class II Road Base Installation
We prefer Class II road base over decomposed granite. Class II is an unbound mixture of 3/4-inch minus crushed rock and fines, the same material CalTrans installs beneath roads and highways. The base is compacted in lifts using a plate compactor until we reach 95% compaction. For pet areas, we assess the soil drainage beneath the base before compaction. In areas with high clay content, we may recommend a French drain or additional gravel layer beneath the Class II to prevent any subsurface pooling during heavy rain.
Weed Barrier and Turf Layout
Once the base is compacted, we install a DuPont 25-year polyethylene weed barrier over the entire area. This is a heavy-duty fabric that does not deteriorate the way some fabric types do. It is tacked to the base using sod staples or nails. The turf is then rolled out and positioned so the grain of the fibers faces the primary viewing direction, typically toward the house in backyard installs and toward the street in front yards.
S-Seam Turf Seaming
Seaming is the most critical step and the one most installers get wrong. The standard method is a butt-seam: two edges pushed together in a straight line and nailed every 4 to 6 inches. We use the S-Seam method on every installation. A proprietary stencil cuts both edges in a 9-inch radius curve, allowing the panels to overlap. The seam is secured with 12-inch, .48mm seaming tape and a specialty adhesive designed for turf, then nailed through the S-Seam with 40D 5-inch common nails. The result is a seam that is invisible under normal viewing conditions.
Pet Infill Application
For pet turf, we use Durafill as the primary infill. Durafill is a rounded quartzidic sand with an acrylic coating that makes it non-absorbent and less abrasive on paw pads than angular silica sand. Its Microban antimicrobial technology prevents the bacteria in pet urine from establishing in the infill layer. For kennels or high-density dog areas, we add Zeofill as a secondary odor control layer, a natural zeolite mineral that absorbs ammonia gases before they reach the surface.
Power Broom Finish
The final step is grooming the installed turf with a motorized power broom. The broom is run against the grain of the turf fibers, which drives the infill down below the thatch line and stands the fibers upright. This gives the turf its finished, full appearance. A push-broom or grandi rake can achieve the same result but a motorized broom is significantly faster on larger installations.
Signs You Need Pet-Specific Turf
You have more than one dog
Single small dogs on general landscape turf is manageable. Multiple dogs or larger breeds create drainage and odor conditions that require the Go-Flow backing and antimicrobial infill system from the start.
Your current turf or lawn smells after warm weather
If you are already dealing with odor from natural grass or a previous turf install, the problem is almost always infill or backing. Standard silica sand absorbs and holds urine. Durafill does not.
Your HOA requires turf that looks like landscape grass
Kennel Pro is designed for pet function but still looks like residential landscape turf. Most HOAs that permit artificial turf in San Diego County will approve Kennel Pro. We review HOA guidelines before finalizing any install.
You want to keep the whole yard
We can install Kennel Pro across the full backyard rather than just a designated run. Some dog owners prefer this, consistent drainage and infill across the whole space rather than a separate zone that the dog ignores anyway.
You had a previous pet turf install that failed
The two most common failure points are backing that does not drain fast enough and infill that holds odor. If a previous install developed drainage issues or persistent smell, those are product and specification failures, not turf failures. We can assess and replace.
A site visit from Panjia shows you the Kennel Pro product on your property, walks you through the drainage and infill system in detail, and gives you a written estimate with no obligation.

Pet Turf Questions from San Diego Dog Owners
Yes, when installed with appropriate materials. Panjia uses PFAS-free turf products only. The infill we use for pet areas is Durafill, a Microban-treated antimicrobial sand that resists the bacteria in pet urine that cause odor. We do not use crumb rubber infill in pet areas because it increases surface temperature.
Kennel Pro, the product we install for dedicated pet areas, uses Go-Flow backing with a drainage rate of over 800 inches per hour. For comparison, natural grass and standard soil drain significantly slower, typically a fraction of what engineered turf backing achieves. Liquid passes through the backing immediately and disperses into the Class II base below.
Not if it is installed correctly. The two factors that cause odor are infill that absorbs and holds urine and poor drainage that lets liquid pool on the surface or in the base. We address both: Go-Flow backing drains immediately, and Durafill infill with Microban prevents the bacterial breakdown that creates ammonia odor. For large dog areas or kennels we also recommend Zeofill as a secondary odor control layer.
For dedicated dog runs and pet areas, we install Kennel Pro. For yards that need to serve both pets and general use, El Dorado 80 with Durafill infill works well. The right product depends on how many dogs, how large they are, and how much of the yard they will be using.
For solid waste, remove it as you would from natural grass and rinse the area with a garden hose. For urine, the drainage system handles it, no rinse required for routine use. For a deeper clean, a diluted enzyme cleaner applied and rinsed off every few months keeps the system fresh in high-use areas.
Yes. In areas with active gopher activity, we install gopher wire barrier between the compacted base and the weed fabric. This is a standard part of our install in most of North County San Diego where gopher pressure is high.
