The Difference Between a Practice Green and a Real One
Pile Height Determines Ball Roll
Standard landscape turf has a pile height of 1.5 to 2 inches. Platinum Putt is cut to ask at your site visit. That is not a small difference, it is the difference between a lawn and a practice surface. Anything taller than 1/2 inch will significantly change how a ball breaks and rolls.
The Break Is Built Into the Base
Undulations are not created by stretching or folding the turf, they are shaped into the compacted base before the turf goes down. We use a combination of fill material and plate compaction to create the grade changes you want, then install the turf over the finished surface. The shape is permanent.
Built as Part of Your Outdoor Space
A putting green does not have to be a standalone project. We regularly build greens as part of a paver patio and outdoor living build, fringe turf surrounding the green, a chipping mat area off the fringe, and a paver path connecting it to the main patio.

The Putting Green Installation Process
Design and Cup Placement Planning
We visit your property and walk the space with you. We discuss how many cups you want, where you want the breaks to run, and how the green connects to the rest of your outdoor space. Cup placement and undulation direction are finalized at this stage because they determine everything about how the base is shaped.
Excavation and Base Drainage
We excavate to a minimum of 4 inches to create room for the base and shape the undulations. In areas with poor native drainage, we install a perforated drain pipe beneath the base to handle heavy rain events. The perforated backing on Platinum Putt handles routine drainage without assistance.
Base Shaping and Grade Work
Class II road base is brought in and compacted in lifts. As compaction proceeds, the base is shaped to create the undulations you specified in the design phase. This is the most time-consuming step, getting the break directions and grades exactly right requires careful work at each lift.
Platinum Putt and Fringe Installation
Platinum Putt is installed over the shaped base. Where the green meets the surrounding landscape, we install a fringe turf, a slightly taller product that visually separates the green from the surrounding area. Fringe is typically 2 to 4 feet wide around the perimeter of the green.
Cup Setting and Final Adjustment
Regulation 4.25-inch cups are installed at the planned locations. We hand-tamp the turf around each cup to ensure a clean, tight fit. We walk the finished green with you, test ball roll from multiple positions, and make any minor adjustments to fixture position or pile direction before we leave.
